The 4-Week Winter Skin & Nail Routine

Winter is a pincer movement: cold, dry air outside and heated, dry air inside. After 55, skin holds moisture less easily and nails get more brittle, so the season shows up on your hands first. This routine runs four weeks, and — as always on this site — the free basics come first and do most of the work.

The routine, week by week

Week 1 — Moisture discipline

Moisturise straight after washing, while hands are still slightly damp. Keep a small tube or tub wherever you actually wash — the bathroom, the kitchen sink — because the cream in a drawer across the house doesn't count. Shorter, warmer (not hot) showers help more than any product.

Week 2 — Gentle care

Swap harsh soaps for gentle cleansers. Wear gloves for washing-up and for going out — cold wind on bare, damp hands is the worst combination of the season. Stop filing nails when they're wet and soft; trim after a bath, file when dry.

Week 3 — Nutrition basics

Skin and nails are built, slowly, from what you eat. Ordinary things: enough protein across the day, water you're actually drinking, and the fats from normal food — eggs, fish, nuts. Nothing exotic, nothing in a capsule pretending to be a meal.

Week 4 — Review and keep what worked

Look at your hands honestly. Most people find weeks 1–2 did the heavy lifting. Keep those habits and drop the fuss that didn't earn its place.

See a professional if… a nail changes colour or shape in a way that doesn't grow out, skin cracks bleed or won't heal, or you develop a rash that spreads. Those are for a pharmacist or doctor, not a routine.

Where a support formula fits

Nano Defense Pro is the product readers keep asking about in this category — a support formula for skin and nails. The vendor describes its approach in terms of "nano molecules"; that is the maker's framing of its own product, and we present it as exactly that — their framing, not a finding of ours. Where a formula like this fits, if it fits at all, is after the four weeks above, as an addition to habits that already work — never instead of them.
